Featured Projects of the Environmental Technology Advancement Award

Project Title: Integrated and Industrialized Application of Intensive, Efficient, Low-Carbon Fluidized Biofilm Technology for Wastewater Treatment

Project Number: HJJS-2023-1-04

Award Level: First Prize

Completing Institution: An outstanding team comprising Qingdao University of Technology, Qingdao Sprun Water Treatment Co., Ltd., and Qingdao Municipal Engineering Design Institute Co., Ltd.

Authors: An innovative achievement jointly developed under the leadership of Bi Xuejun, with the collaborative contributions of experts including Liu Li, Wu Di, and others.

Project Overview:

After more than a decade of intensive research and engineering practice, this project—strongly supported by national key water‑related programs and other science‑and‑technology initiatives—has overcome a series of technical challenges and achieved systematic innovation in wastewater treatment technologies. We have not only broken international monopolies but also addressed numerous critical bottlenecks inherent in conventional wastewater treatment methods.

- Innovation in Core Technology: We were the first to propose and develop a fluidized biofilm–magnetic coagulation–based wastewater treatment technology for nitrogen and phosphorus removal, tailored to stringent effluent discharge standards. This approach significantly reduces land footprint, increases the system’s volumetric nitrogen removal capacity, and achieves dual reductions in both capital costs and energy consumption.

- Innovation in Key Technological Equipment: We have innovatively developed a low-energy fluidization method for biofilm carriers and a durable fluidized biofilm carrier interception technology, significantly reducing energy consumption and equipment wear while shortening the construction timeline.

- Innovation in new material approaches: We have established a method for characterizing the performance of biofilm carriers, developed highly efficient fluidized biofilm carriers, and achieved large-scale industrial production and application.

Results and Impact:

This technological achievement has been granted 18 invention patents, 7 utility model patents, 2 design patents, and 5 software copyrights. It has also resulted in the publication of 23 academic papers, including 8 SCI-indexed articles. The technology has been successfully deployed in municipal wastewater treatment, high-ammonia‑nitrogen industrial water treatment, and low‑concentration river‑water treatment projects across multiple provinces and cities, with a total treatment capacity of 4.2 million tons per day and cumulative sales revenue of RMB 662 million over the past three years.

Acceptance Speech:

At a critical juncture in the development of ecological civilization, our team has adhered to the high‑quality development principles of “resource conservation and intensive use, green and low‑carbon,” and developed wastewater treatment technologies aligned with the concept of green development. These innovations have not only alleviated land‑use constraints arising from rapid urbanization but have also enhanced the overall efficiency of wastewater treatment, elevated the standards of environmental infrastructure, and advanced the industry’s transition toward green and low‑carbon practices.

Background of the Environmental Technology Advancement Award:
